THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING HUMANITIES

1972. APRIL 28th. : Glasgow's Upper Clyde Shipbuilders engineer - and legendary Trade Union leader - Jimmy Reid gave his acceptance speech at his inauguration as Rector (Principal) of The University of Glasgow: after his election to that position by the students of the university.

The speech was described by the New York Times as 'the greatest speech since President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address'. 😲

It's a VERY important assertion: and one that wasn't heeded: modern society and education is  now - and more than ever before - geared towards the purpose of shovelling out cogs in the economy machine: contributors to industry and commerce: and NOT towards the original and intended purpose of education: to teach, encourage and and nurture children to be fully rounded and complete human beings - fully equipped to understand and manage all aspects of being the wonderful thing that is a HUMAN BEING - and thereby able to get the very most out of life: able to better cope with hardships - and better enjoy and appreciate the good things and beauty in life. 

Western education was originally based on the model in Plato's Republic: which insisted upon education in Physical training and sport; Mathematics; Science; the Arts; and Philosophy: addressing what's called the Big Questions: about existence itself.

Jimmy Reid - a celebrated socialist and down to earth working man - saw how the Humanities, Arts and Philosophy were being gradually marginalised and side-lined by education: while education purely for the purpose of learning commercial skills in order to 'get a good job' was becoming the sole purpose of education... 😔

Learning about the abstract wonders of being alive and being human was a diminishing part of education: the Establishment authorities and social and economic systems in the world - both left and right - wanted only human automatons that would keep the relentless machinery turning... 😔

I've been saying the same thing for years; many people have: but it's fallen on deaf ears: Humanities subjects are more than ever marginalised and dismissed as frivolous irrelevance. 😔

The result is a society that is being educated in only the most superficial understanding of Humanities: Language, Literature, Art, Music, History,  Philosophy, Theology, World Religions... And is, consequently, indoctrinated into a superficial, flawed, shallow, juvenile and infantile understanding of these subjects: resulting in History being rewritten and skewed, and people's ability to ponder the unfathomable and essential questions of existence reduced to one shallow Materialist ideological paradigm: while being encouraged to mock all alternative ideologies.

... And a society that is consequently thereby very easy to manipulate and control...

We are not rats in a rat race; we are not worth no more, no less than any animal: we are HUMAN BEINGS: and we are wonderful: because we seek to learn all about about ALL of existence and existing - and to understand and to grow... 😎 🥰

I wish Jimmy Reid had been listened to back in 1972 - and his words acted upon. 😔
